Yes. To perform a comprehensive evaluation of the retina and macula, your pupils must be dilated. For new patients, this is a standard part of your first exam with Dr. Ahmed Elkeeb. Dilation typically lasts 4–6 hours and causes light sensitivity and blurry near vision. We strongly recommend bringing sunglasses. The Retina Wellness Screening is the exception. It is done without dilating drops.
-
New patient consultations usually take between 1 to 2 hours. This time is necessary for a full history, dilation, advanced diagnostic imaging (like OCT), and a thorough discussion of your results with the doctor. Follow-up visits are typically an hour or less.
-
While many patients feel comfortable driving with sunglasses after dilation, the drops do cause blurred vision. If you are receiving an in-office treatment (like an injection) or if you are uncomfortable driving while dilated, we strongly recommend arranging for a driver.

Dr. Elkeeb is an in-network provider for a wide range of plans, including Medicare Part B, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, Florida Blue commercial plans, WellCare, TRICARE East, MultiPlan, Prime Health Services, Partners Direct Health and TRPN DirectPay.
We are also credentialed with iCare Health Solutions, which manages the eye care benefit for a number of Florida Medicaid, Healthy Kids and Medicare Advantage plans — including Simply Healthcare, Molina, Clear Health Alliance, Community Care Plan, Freedom Health and Optimum HealthCare. He is not in network with UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage (the AARP-branded plans) or Florida Blue Medicare Advantage (BlueMedicare). Medicare Advantage plans are contracted separately from a company’s commercial plans, so please check the plan name printed on your card.
Please upload your insurance and identification cards in the Patient Portal so we can verify your specific coverage before your visit. The full list of plans, including those still in credentialing, is on our insurance page.

No. These exams are best performed by an optometrist who can provide a glasses prescription. This ensures your state forms are filled out accurately with your best-corrected vision.
